Elklan: Speech and Language Support for 5-11s a 5 day intensive course for primary school teachers/teaching assistants
Develop your knowlege & practical ideas to promote the communication skills of all young children but particularly those with Speech,Language and Communication Difficulties.
It is a requirement, if schools are interested in obtaining Communication Friendly Status, that teaching assistants and teachers (in the first instance) undertake Elklan training. This course is an intensive form of the 10 week accredited course offered for teaching assistants. Course participants will be expected to complete the same portfolio of tasks although attendance for the 'taught' element of the course will be over 5 full days. As this is an accredited course, this cost and the cost of the course manual (Language Builders) are both included in the cost of the course. The course Manual is also available in Welsh. The course aims to provide some theoretical knowledge and share practical skills and ideas in the following areas: Week 1: What is communication? Week 2: Improving listening, attention and independent learning skills. Week 3: Listening, memory and understanding spoken language Week 4: Modifying adults’ speech to help a child understand language Week 5: Understanding beyond simple sentences Week 6: Expressive language development Week 7: Promoting effective communication and social skills Week 8: Supporting children with unclear speech Week 9: Linking speech to reading and writing Week 10: Management of stammering and other issues raised during the course. This course will provide opportunities for you to develop knowledge and practical ideas to promote the communication skills of all young children but particularly those with speech and language difficulties. It also enables you to advise teaching assistants working in your settings to support children with speech, language and communication needs.
